Recent Settlement Against the City of Philadelphia
We are pleased to report a recent settlement on behalf of our client who was seriously injured in a violent crash involving a City of Philadelphia Police vehicle that occurred in the early morning hours of September 27, 2023.
In the moments leading up to the crash, our client was driving northbound on Allegheny Avenue, approaching the intersection with Glenwood Avenue. With a green light in her direction, our client lawfully proceeded into the intersection. Unfortunately, a Philadelphia Police Department officer entered the intersection from Glenwood Avenue against a solid red light, causing a devastating collision with our client’s vehicle.
Given the severity of the crash, the incident received media coverage across several news outlets, including reports from Action News, NBC10 and FOX 29. The force of the crash was so significant that it caused our client’s vehicle to be pushed onto the sidewalk. Shown below are photographs taken from the accident scene, showing the extent of the damage sustained by both vehicles.
Upon being retained, our law firm immediately began investigating the accident. After filing suit, we conducted thorough discovery which revealed that the Philadelphia Police Department’s Safety Review Board had conducted an internal investigation and found that the officer operating the vehicle had violated Police Directive 9.7: Safe Operation of Police Vehicles, specifically the requirement to fully clear an intersection before entering. During the officer’s deposition, we successfully got the officer to acknowledge she violated department policy, as well as an admission that the crash was preventable. With these key findings, we were able to secure a substantial settlement with the City of Philadelphia on behalf of our client.
